Troedyrhiw and Pentrebach are neighbouring communities on the valley floor of Merthyr Tydfil in south Wales, their character shaped by 19th‑century ironworking and coal mining. Troedyrhiw (the name meaning "foot of the slope") sits beside the River Taff with rows of traditional terraced housing, local shops and a strong community feel, and offers easy access to the Taff Trail and valley walks that remind you of the area's industrial past set against dramatic upland scenery.
Pentrebach grew up more as an industrial and transport hub: it has a large industrial estate historically anchored by household‑appliance manufacturing and light industry, and a railway halt on the Merthyr line, with the A470 running close by. Today both places combine working‑class roots with ongoing regeneration and commuter links to Cardiff, keeping a mix of local identity, industrial heritage and everyday community life.
