Fochriw is a former coal‑mining village in the county borough of Caerphilly in south Wales, sitting on the upland fringe above the valleys. It occupies a compact, hilly site and still gives a sense of place from its rows of Victorian and early‑20th‑century houses and the surrounding patchwork of reclaimed industrial land and moorland; the setting offers easy access to walks on the uplands and views down the valley.
The village grew up around 19th‑century mining and the railway and that heritage shapes local identity today: you’ll find a largely residential community of commuters and long‑term locals, small shops and community facilities, and active social groups that keep mining memory alive through halls, clubs and events. Economically Fochriw is no longer industrially driven, but the landscape, local history and strong community networks remain notable features.
