Torfaen

Unitary authority in Wales

Coordinates:51.7, -3.04
OS grid ref:SO 27 00

Torfaen sits in south‑east Wales, a compact mix of valleys and uplands shaped by the Afon Lwyd. It neighbours Newport, Caerphilly and Monmouthshire, and rises towards the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, giving a varied landscape between urban centres and rural high ground.

The area’s industrial past - coal, iron and rail - left a strong imprint: the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Big Pit museum documents its mining heritage. Contemporary Cwmbran is the retail and business hub, while light industry, services and commuters travelling to Cardiff and Newport shape the modern economy.

There’s an active cultural and community life, from parks such as Pontypool Park and walking routes along reclaimed industrial sites to local arts, festivals and Welsh language initiatives. Socially it’s a patchwork of post‑industrial towns and newer suburbs, with a strong sense of local identity and growing interest in heritage tourism.
