Torfaen sits in south‑east Wales, a compact mix of valleys and uplands shaped by the Afon Lwyd. It neighbours Newport, Caerphilly and Monmouthshire, and rises towards the foothills of the Brecon Beacons, giving a varied landscape between urban centres and rural high ground.
The area’s industrial past - coal, iron and rail - left a strong imprint: the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Big Pit museum documents its mining heritage.
