The parish of Barry sits on the northern shore of the Bristol Channel in the Vale of Glamorgan, a short commuter journey from Cardiff. Its coastline includes the sandy seafront of Barry Island, and the town expanded rapidly in the 19th century when Barry Docks were built to export South Wales coal, leaving a strong Victorian dockland imprint.
That industrial legacy has been partly regenerated into a marina, housing and light industry, while leisure and tourism - notably the beaches and amusements on Barry Island and its TV connections - remain important. Today Barry combines seaside character, a working waterfront and commuter suburbs, giving it a mixed social scene and ongoing regeneration projects.
