The Vale of Glamorgan is a coastal unitary authority in South Wales, stretching from the western suburbs of Cardiff to the cliffs and beaches of the Bristol Channel. Its landscape mixes low rolling farmland, limestone escarpments and sandy bays such as Barry Island, Southerndown and Ogmore-by-Sea, making it popular for coastal walks and seaside visits.
Economically the area combines agriculture and tourism with commuter links into Cardiff and a growing light-industrial and aerospace presence around St Athan and the Bro Tathan business area. Barry Island remains a classic seaside resort and is widely known as the setting for the TV sitcom Gavin & Stacey, while market towns like Cowbridge and Penarth add independent shops, cafés and cultural events.
Historically part of the county of Glamorgan, the Vale is dotted with medieval churches, manor houses and coastal castles such as St Donat's Castle, home to Atlantic College. The mix of prosperous coastal suburbs, working farming communities and heritage sites gives the Vale a varied social character and strong local identity.
