Ceiriog Ucha sits in the upper reaches of the Ceiriog Valley within the county borough of Wrexham, a largely rural, hilly area carved by the winding River Ceiriog. Small villages such as Glyn Ceiriog and Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog dot the valley floor; the landscape of steep woodlands and hedged pasture is popular with walkers and birdwatchers and feels pleasantly remote despite being close to the English border and larger towns.
The valley’s history is marked by slate quarrying and the narrow-gauge Glyn Valley Tramway, and it is culturally important through its association with the poet John Ceiriog Hughes. Today the local economy leans on hill farming, small-scale tourism and commuting, while chapels, community halls and eisteddfod traditions help sustain the Welsh language and a strong local identity.
