Darfield is a village and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, sitting on the edge of the Dearne Valley a few miles to the north‑east of Barnsley town centre. It grew up as a coal‑mining community in the 19th and 20th centuries, and that industrial heritage is still visible in the built environment and local memory.
Today the ward is largely residential with local shops, schools and community clubs, and many residents commute to nearby towns and cities for work. Green spaces, remnants of industrial archaeology and active community organisations give the area a strong local identity - broadly proud of its mining past while adapting to post‑industrial economic and social change.
