Carlton and Chellington form a compact, largely rural parish in the Borough of Bedford, Bedfordshire, set amid arable fields and small woodlands just a short distance from the River Great Ouse. The two villages retain a quiet, village feel with lanes, hedgerows and a scattering of historic houses and farmsteads, making the area popular for walking and cycling while still being within commuting range of the larger town of Bedford.
Locally the community balances traditional farming with a mix of residents who work locally or travel to nearby towns; village life centres on a church, village hall and occasional community events rather than shops or industry. The settlements have medieval roots and a number of listed buildings and vernacular cottages, so there’s a strong sense of history combined with the practicalities of modern rural living.
