Newtown is an inner‑city ward just north of Birmingham city centre, sitting close to neighbourhoods such as Aston and Lozells. It’s a compact, densely built area of mostly Victorian terraces and former industrial sites, with canals and rail corridors that hint at its 19th‑century manufacturing past and give the area a distinctly urban, working‑town character.
Today Newtown is culturally diverse, with lively community groups, places of worship and small businesses reflecting long‑standing South Asian, Afro‑Caribbean and other migrant communities; at the same time it faces familiar inner‑city challenges and pockets of deprivation, alongside pockets of regeneration and local projects aiming to boost housing, employment and social facilities.
