Horwich sits on the upland fringe of Bolton, bordering the heather and reservoirs of the West Pennine Moors and within easy reach of Winter Hill and Rivington. That position gives it unexpectedly attractive walking country and wide views, while still functioning as a commuter town for Manchester and surrounding centres.
Historically it expanded in the 19th century around engineering and railway work, most famously the Horwich Works; the closure of heavy industry reshaped the local economy and the former works site has been redeveloped into the Middlebrook retail and business area, including the University of Bolton Stadium. Today Horwich mixes suburban housing, light industry and active community life, with local clubs, green spaces and a strong sense of local identity rooted in its industrial past and moorland setting.
