Bearpark is a small village and civil parish in County Durham, England, lying a few miles west of Durham in the valley of the River Browney. The setting mixes the remnants of 19th‑ and early 20th‑century mining architecture with more recent housing, and offers easy access to countryside walks and local wildlife along the river corridors.
Historically the community grew around the coal industry, but the parish also takes its name from nearby Beaurepaire, the site of a ruined medieval retreat whose name means “beautiful retreat.” Today Bearpark retains a strong local identity with active community groups, village amenities and a largely commuter population who work in Durham and the wider North East while valuing the area’s industrial heritage and rural surroundings.
