Brandon is a small former colliery village in County Durham, England, lying to the west of the city of Durham in the valley of the River Browney. It forms part of the civil parish of Brandon and Byshottles and sits amid rolling Durham countryside, within easy reach of larger towns such as Bishop Auckland and Newcastle upon Tyne.
Historically the village grew around Brandon Colliery and the coal industry, leaving a legacy of terraced housing, miners’ institutions and a strong community identity; the mid-20th century pit closures reshaped the local economy and life. Today many people commute to nearby centres while local life revolves around pubs, clubs, village halls and green spaces, and the area is valued both for its industrial heritage and easy access to walking and cycling country lanes.
