Ushaw Moor and Bearpark are neighbouring former colliery villages on the western fringe of Durham in County Durham, set among rolling farmland and woodlands with the River Browney running close by. Both grew up in the 19th and early 20th centuries around coal mining and still show that industrial heritage in their terraced streets and occasional colliery remains, but they sit within easy commuting distance of the city so feel semi-rural rather than isolated.
Locally notable is Ushaw College, the handsome former Catholic seminary on the edge of Ushaw Moor that now hosts exhibitions, concerts and weddings and adds a strong cultural and historic presence. Today the two villages have a quietly active community life with sports clubs, local shops and community centres, while the local economy has shifted from deep mining to a mix of small businesses, light industry and commuting to Durham and beyond.
