Castle Eden is a small rural parish in County Durham, sitting inland from the Durham coast between Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees. The village and surrounding farmland have a quiet, village‑green feel with a tight‑knit community; historically the area has been shaped by agriculture and the wider coalfield economy, while today many residents commute to nearby towns and ports.
The parish is best known for Castle Eden Dene, a steep, wooded gorge designated a national nature reserve and SSSI for its ancient woodland, spring flowers and walking routes that connect down towards the Durham coast. You can also find the remains and setting of older estate landscapes and a notable country house in the locality, giving the place a mix of natural, historic and rural character.
