Shotton is a civil parish in County Durham, in the north-east of England, lying on the old Durham coalfield a few miles inland from the North Sea coast and close to towns such as Peterlee and Horden. The landscape is a mix of low-lying former industrial land, pockets of farmland and typical terraced housing from the mining era, with easy road links for commuters heading towards Sunderland and the wider Tees Valley conurbation.
Historically the community grew around a 19th and 20th-century colliery, and that mining heritage still shapes local identity through surviving architecture, memorials and community clubs. Since the pits closed the parish has become largely residential, sustaining small local businesses and social organisations while retaining a strong sense of community and occasional heritage events that mark its industrial past.
