Horden is a former colliery village on the north-east coast of County Durham in England, sitting close to the North Sea. Built up around Horden Colliery in the early 20th century, its landscape and housing were shaped by mining; the pit’s closure in 1987 hit the local economy hard and left visible reminders in the form of former industrial sites and spoil heaps, alongside a stretch of coastline and beaches that still define the area.
The village retains a strong community identity rooted in that mining past, with local clubs, memorials and grassroots regeneration projects working to tackle social and economic challenges. Improved transport links, including the reopening of the local rail stop in 2020, have helped connect Horden more easily with Durham and Newcastle, aiding access to jobs and services while community groups continue to push for investment and better prospects.
