Peterlee West is the western part of the new‑town settlement of Peterlee in County Durham, sitting on the edge of the former Durham coalfield and within reach of the Durham coast. The area mixes post‑war housing estates with pockets of green space and local shops, and sits within the wider legacy of the town’s modernist public art and planning - most famously the Apollo Pavilion nearby - giving it an unusual mix of municipal-era architecture and community facilities.
Historically the neighbourhood grew to house mining families from the surrounding pits, and like much of the former Easington district it has seen regeneration projects and changing employment patterns since the colliery closures. Today it’s characterised by active community groups, local schools and small businesses, with many residents commuting to larger towns for work while retaining a strong local identity tied to the area’s industrial past.
