Chilton is a small village and civil parish in County Durham, located in the north‑east of England not far from Bishop Auckland and within easy reach of Durham and the rolling countryside of the Durham Dales. The settlement sits amid gently undulating farmland and former industrial land, giving a mix of rural views and the compact terraces and streets typical of this part of County Durham.
Historically Chilton grew around coal mining and retains much of that social history in its community identity; the decline of the pits has left the village more residential and commuter‑oriented, but local clubs, shops and parish activities keep a strong sense of local life. There are also traces of industrial heritage in former pit sites and community memorials, while its proximity to larger towns means residents can easily access wider services and cultural amenities.
