Murton is a village in County Durham in the north‑east of England, historically part of the Durham coalfield. It sits a few miles inland from the Durham coast close to Seaham and roughly eight miles east of Durham, and developed as a tightly knit pit village centred on its colliery through the 20th century.
Since the decline of coal mining the village has undergone the familiar post‑industrial changes: former colliery land has been landscaped or repurposed, and the local economy now mixes small businesses, commuter households and ongoing regeneration projects. Murton still carries a strong community identity rooted in its mining heritage, reflected in local clubs, events and memorials to that era.
