Murton is a village and civil parish in County Durham, in the north-east of England, sitting close to the Durham coast and the coastal town of Seaham. The parish occupies a mix of former coalfield terrain and agricultural land, and its location gives reasonably straightforward commuter links into Durham and Sunderland.
Much of the village’s character comes from its 19th–20th century expansion as a mining community, so local identity is shaped by that industrial heritage even as the economy has diversified since the pits closed. You’ll find a strong sense of local community, with village halls, sports clubs and grassroots groups active in regeneration and maintaining social life, while former industrial sites have been partially reclaimed for recreation and small-scale enterprise.
