Easington in County Durham sits on the Durham coast overlooking the North Sea, forming part of the stretch often called the Durham Coast with its cliffs, beaches and seaside wildlife. It lies close to other former mining and new‑town communities such as Peterlee and coastal towns like Seaham, so the village feels very much part of that north‑east coastal landscape rather than an inland rural backwater.
The area was transformed in the 20th century by coal mining - Easington Colliery and associated pits shaped the economy, built community institutions and left a strong industrial heritage that is still visible in memorials, social clubs and local identity. Like many former mining communities it has faced economic and social challenges since the pits closed, but there’s an active interest in celebrating history and making the most of the coastal setting for wildlife, walking and local regeneration projects.
