Stanhope is a large rural parish in County Durham, centred on the little market village of the same name in the heart of Weardale. The parish follows the meanders of the River Wear and sits beneath the open moors of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so the landscape is a mix of pastoral farmland, limestone scars and old mining scars that draw walkers and bird‑watchers alike.
Locally the economy still leans on agriculture and tourism, with a visible heritage of lead mining, lime‑working and railway infrastructure that now attracts enthusiasts to the Weardale Railway and the small museums and information centres around the dale. Communities such as Frosterley and other hamlets maintain a strong village life with traditional events, outdoor pursuits and an emphasis on conserving the parish’s industrial and natural history.
