Tanfield Lea is a small former colliery village in County Durham, England, sitting on the industrial fringe of the Pennines a few miles west of Stanley. It grew up around 19th-century coal mining and is close to visible reminders of that past such as the preserved Tanfield Railway and the historic Causey Arch, which give the area a strong industrial-heritage identity.
Today Tanfield Lea is largely residential, with local shops, pubs and community facilities serving a population that increasingly commutes to nearby towns and to Newcastle for work. The village combines that working-class history with walks, green spaces and heritage attractions nearby, so it appeals both to locals proud of their past and visitors interested in County Durham's industrial story.
