The two former coal‑mining villages of Craghead and South Moor sit just north of Stanley in County Durham. Perched on relatively high ground, they look out over the surrounding valley and retain a landscape still shaped by their industrial past - rows of terraced houses, the hummocks of reclaimed colliery sites and a number of memorials and community projects that commemorate mining heritage.
Since the pits closed the area has become a quieter, largely residential part of the former coalfield with a mix of commuters and local trades, small shops and community facilities. There’s a strong local identity centred on clubs, churches, brass bands and volunteer groups; regeneration and green‑space projects have gradually softened the industrial footprint while local history and events keep that mining story prominent in social and cultural life.
