Wolsingham in County Durham is a small, market town on the edge of Weardale, sitting by the gently flowing River Wear. It has a compact high street of independent shops, cafes and traditional pubs and serves as a convenient base for visitors heading into the hills - it’s not far from Durham and the sweeping moorland of the North Pennines AONB.
Historically the town grew around agriculture, lead mining and later small-scale industry, with the arrival of the railway boosting trade; today the preserved Weardale Railway and the surrounding landscape make it a draw for walkers, cyclists and heritage enthusiasts. The community is active with local events, an agricultural tradition and a largely service-oriented economy that leans on tourism and local enterprise.
