Armthorpe is a large village and civil parish on the outskirts of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, lying on fairly flat, low-lying land that made it traditionally agricultural before the 20th‑century coal boom. It sits conveniently close to major transport links such as the A1(M) and M18, making it a popular commuter base for the wider Doncaster area while still feeling distinctly local in character.
The village has a strong coal‑mining heritage which shaped its growth and community institutions - miners’ welfare clubs, local sports teams (notably the football side), and social networks remain important. Since the pits closed, former industrial sites have seen housing and light industrial redevelopment, and Armthorpe now combines modern amenities, leisure facilities and regular community events with a visible sense of local history.
