Armthorpe is a ward within the metropolitan borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, lying a few miles east of Doncaster town centre on the flat agricultural plain with convenient road links to the M18. The area is largely residential, with a mix of post‑war terraces and newer estates that have made it part of the wider commuter belt serving Doncaster and neighbouring towns.
Armthorpe grew from an agricultural settlement into a tight‑knit mining community centred on Armthorpe Colliery, and that heritage still shapes local identity through social clubs, memorials and grassroots sport; the colliery’s closure prompted economic change towards light industry, retail and commuting, while strong community organisations and local teams help retain a distinctive village feel within the larger Doncaster conurbation.
