Mexborough sits on the banks of the River Don in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, roughly between Doncaster and Sheffield. Its location by the river and historic canal routes made it an industrial and transport hub during the 19th and 20th centuries, and you can still see that legacy in terraces, railway lines and river-side industry remnants.
Historically shaped by coal mining and heavy engineering, Mexborough experienced the same economic shifts as much of the former coalfield, with pit closures leading to regeneration and a growing commuter role for nearby cities. The town retains a strong local identity, community clubs and social traditions born from its industrial past, alongside pockets of redevelopment and small-scale commercial activity.
