Thorne is a small market town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, set on the edge of the low-lying Humberhead Levels. It sits by the network of waterways around the River Don and the Stainforth and Keadby Canal, and is notable for its proximity to Thorne Moors - part of the Thorne and Hatfield Moors lowland peatlands, one of the largest raised bog areas in England and an important site for wildlife and peat conservation.
Historically the town’s economy was shaped by peat extraction and inland navigation, and vestiges of its market-town character remain around the parish centre and the parish church of St Nicholas Church. Today it combines local shops, light industry and a commuter population linked to nearby urban centres, while local community groups and conservation bodies are active in promoting the area’s distinctive natural and historic landscape.
