Cerne Abbas sits in a shallow chalk valley of the Dorset Downs in rural Dorset, with the River Cerne running through the village and surrounding countryside. The area is famous for the ancient hill figure, the Cerne Abbas Giant, and the atmospheric ruins of Cerne Abbey, giving the place a strong historic and archaeological character that draws walkers and antiquarian interest.
Much of the local economy remains agricultural, with sheep and arable farms on the chalk uplands, but tourism linked to the Giant, abbey and countryside walks is important too. Despite visitors, Cerne Abbas retains a quiet, close‑knit community with traditional village amenities, occasional local events and a peaceful rural character prized by residents and visitors alike.
