Howden is a compact market town in the East Riding of Yorkshire district of England, sited on the north bank of the River Ouse amid the flat arable landscape that drains towards the Humber estuary. Its riverside position helped make it a local centre for agriculture and trade, and the town still retains a small historic core of stone and timber‑framed buildings.
The town is best known for Howden Minster, a large medieval church dating largely from the 12th–15th centuries with notable carved choir stalls, and the earthworks and remnants of Howden Castle, which give the place a distinctly medieval feel. Today the local economy blends farming, independent shops and small businesses, with many residents commuting to larger centres such as Hull and York, and a steady programme of community events and clubs sustaining village‑town social life.
