Sunk Island

Parish in East Riding of Yorkshire, England

Coordinates:53.656, -0.055
OS grid ref:TA 28 19
Dialling code: 01472 (Grimsby)

Sunk Island is a tiny civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, created from silt and sandbanks in the Humber estuary and later enclosed and drained. The area is remarkably flat and low-lying, with a triangular patchwork of arable fields, straight drainage ditches and saltmarsh margins that attract waders and wildfowl.

Historically it began as the sandbank known as the Sunk and was progressively reclaimed in the 18th–19th centuries; today its economy is largely agricultural and its community small and close-knit. The place is often noted for its unusual origin, the prominence of sea defences and drainage in daily life, and its proximity to larger settlements such as Hull, which contrasts with the parish’s remote, estuarine character.
