Swinefleet is a small village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, set in low-lying fenland close to the River Ouse and the town of Goole. The surrounding landscape is part of the peat-rich Humberhead Levels and bears the imprint of historic drainage schemes across Hatfield Chase, so the area feels distinctly flat, rural and shaped by water management.
Its economy and identity have been shaped by agriculture and, in the 20th century, peat extraction - famously at the Swinefleet Peat Works - although peat cutting has declined and there are now conservation and restoration efforts in the local wetlands. Today Swinefleet remains a small, close-knit community that looks to nearby Goole for services while retaining a strong rural character and an evocative place-name reflecting its marshy past.
