The Colnes is a predominantly rural electoral ward in the Colne valley to the west of Braintree in north Essex, formed from a string of villages and hamlets along the River Colne. The landscape is typical Essex countryside - rolling arable fields, hedgerows and small pockets of woodland - with villages such as Earls Colne, Wakes Colne and White Colne providing local services and a distinct village character.
Historically the area is agricultural, with medieval churches, timber‑framed houses and traces of later twentieth‑century activity such as the wartime airfield at Earls Colne; socially it has a strong village community feel, centred on pubs, village halls and local events, while economically it mixes farming and small businesses with a number of residents who commute to Colchester, Chelmsford or London.
