Witham sits in the district of Braintree in Essex, about eleven miles north of Chelmsford, with easy road and Great Eastern Main Line rail links into London that have made it a popular commuter base. The town lies on the banks of the River Brain and close to the River Blackwater, and presents a mix of Victorian streets, newer housing and retail parks alongside light industrial estates.
With medieval origins and an historic parish church, Witham expanded noticeably when the railway arrived in the 1840s; timber-framed buildings and civic gardens sit alongside modern developments. Community activity is quite lively and the town is handy for nearby heritage attractions such as Cressing Temple and the salt‑marsh landscape around Maldon, which offer a contrast to its more suburban character.
