Althorne is a largely rural ward in the district of Maldon, Essex, sitting beside the estuary of the River Crouch. The area is characterised by salt marshes and estuarine landscapes that attract birdlife and offer watersports and sailing opportunities, with close links to the sailing towns of Burnham-on-Crouch. The village grew around agriculture and later the arrival of the railway, and today the local economy is a mix of farming, leisure and small businesses, with many residents commuting to larger centres such as Chelmsford or London via the Crouch Valley Line to Wickford.
There are still pockets of historic, rural character in the ward - cottages, lanes and the imprint of 19th-century development - and a relatively active community life centred on a village hall, pubs and local clubs. Walks along the estuary, birdwatching and boating are common pastimes, and the ward’s low-density settlement and scenic shoreline give it a distinctly coastal Essex feel while remaining closely connected to nearby market towns.
