Mistley is a small riverside village in Tendring, Essex, England, sitting on the north bank of the River Stour close to the Suffolk border and neighbouring Manningtree. Its skyline is marked by the 18th‑century Mistley Towers, the surviving remnant of a grand church complex designed by Robert Adam, and by long red‑brick maltings and a working quay that recall the village’s maritime and industrial past.
Originally developed as a small port for grain and coastal trade, Mistley still wears that shipping heritage alongside a strong natural setting: tidal estuary, salt marshes and mudflats attract birdwatchers, walkers and boaters. The village now mixes residential and creative uses with local pubs and community activity, and serves as a commuter base with rail and road links towards Colchester and Ipswich.
