Lydney sits on the western bank of the River Severn, on the edge of the Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire, England. Historically it grew as a port and industrial centre, linked to local ironworking and coal mining, and the old harbour and dockside still mark its riverside character. The surrounding ancient woodlands and ridges give the town a strong sense of place and plenty of opportunities for walking and outdoor pursuits.
Culturally the town punches above its weight: Lydney Park is noted for its gardens, deer park and archaeological interest thanks to a Roman temple excavation, while the nearby Dean Forest Railway and Lydney station help preserve the area’s transport heritage. Today the local economy mixes tourism, light industry and commuter trade, and community events and small independent shops reflect a lively, close-knit social scene.
