Sandown sits on the east coast of the Isle of Wight, fronting the sweep of Sandown Bay and a long sandy beach with a Victorian seafront and pier. The town is backed by the chalk ridge of Culver Down, offers good views and fossil-hunting opportunities, and hosts the local fossil museum Dinosaur Isle, which reflects the area’s rich geological interest.
Built up as a 19th-century seaside resort, Sandown today relies heavily on tourism, with promenades, arcades, holiday parks and a service economy geared to visitors and an older resident population. It has rail links on the Island Line to Ryde and Shanklin, and a touch of local history too - the site of the Tudor-era Sandown Castle was once part of the island’s coastal defences, much of it now lost to erosion.
