Tilmanstone is a small civil parish in the Dover district of Kent, set in gently rolling agricultural countryside not far from the coast. Historically a farming settlement, it was transformed in the early 20th century by the development of the East Kent coalfield, with housing and community life shaped around the colliery that once dominated the area.
Since the mines closed the landscape and economy have reverted largely to agriculture and commuting to nearby towns such as Canterbury and Dover, but the mining legacy remains visible in local memorials, reclaimed spoil areas and a strong sense of community identity; it’s a quiet place with walking country lanes and a history that reflects both rural Kent and the industrial era that briefly reshaped it.
