New Romney is a compact historic town and ward in the district of Folkestone and Hythe, Kent, sitting on the raised edge of Romney Marsh. Once a medieval port and member of the Cinque Ports confederation, the town is now set well inland after centuries of shingle deposition and marsh reclamation; its narrow streets and an old parish church hint at its long history.
The local economy mixes agriculture on the surrounding marshland with small shops and tourism, helped by visitors to nearby shingle headlands and nature reserves around Dungeness. The heritage Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway is a notable local attraction, and the area is popular with walkers, birdwatchers and anyone interested in the peculiar landscape and communities of the marsh.
