Saltwood is a small village and parish in the district of Folkestone and Hythe in Kent, sitting on the escarpment of the North Downs with views down towards Romney Marsh and the nearby Channel coast. The setting is rural and largely residential, with winding lanes, hedgerows and orchard country; it’s popular with walkers and those wanting easy access to the coast towns of Hythe and Folkestone while remaining within commuting distance of larger centres.
Saltwood’s most striking feature is the medieval Saltwood Castle, a long-standing local landmark with Norman origins and a traditional link to the knights involved in the 1170 murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The village retains a strong local identity centred on its church and community events; economically it is modest and service-orientated, with some tourism drawn by the castle and surrounding countryside rather than intensive commercial development.
