Monkton is a small rural village and civil parish in the district of Thanet, in the county of Kent. It sits on the gentle southern slopes of the North Downs at the edge of the Isle of Thanet, within easy reach of the coast and the nearby towns of Ramsgate and Sandwich. The surrounding landscape is characterised by chalk soils, arable farmland and pockets of traditional orchards, giving the area a quietly pastoral feel despite being close to the sea.
The name reflects medieval monastic ownership and the village still centres on a historic parish church, a handful of cottages and a village hall, with local life revolving around community events and the occasional pub. Economically it remains largely agricultural, with many residents commuting to nearby towns; its setting makes it popular with walkers and anyone interested in Kentish downland and the quieter side of Thanet’s heritage.
