Cleckheaton sits in the eastern part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire, occupying a compact market-town centre in the heart of the old Spen Valley. It grew rapidly in the 19th century on the back of the woollen textile trade, and you still see Victorian civic buildings, former mill units and a compact high street that hints at that industrial past alongside pockets of greener, semi-rural land.
Today the area combines local retail and light manufacturing with a significant number of residents who commute to nearby centres such as Bradford and Huddersfield, being within easy reach of the M62 corridor. Community life is steady and local - sports clubs, churches, and annual events give the place a social focus, while converted mills and ongoing regeneration work reflect a mix of historic character and modest modern change.
