Barnoldswick sits on the eastern edge of the Borough of Pendle in Lancashire, close to the Pennine foothills and within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales. Historically it lay in the West Riding of Yorkshire until the 1974 local government reorganisation, and that borderland identity still shows in local accents and connections. The town occupies a compact valley location with a mix of stone terraces and later industrial buildings that reflect its past.
Long associated with textiles and precision engineering, the local economy has evolved into light industry, engineering and a strong small-business and retail sector, with several specialist manufacturers remaining in and around the industrial estates. Community life is lively for its size, with local sports clubs, independent shops and easy access to countryside walking and cycling, making it a practical base for commuters as well as a hub for surrounding villages.
