Oakthorpe and Donisthorpe sit in the north‑west corner of Leicestershire, close to county borders and set within the former Midlands coalfield. Their landscape still bears the imprint of that industrial past – disused colliery sites, railway earthworks and patches of reclaimed land – which have been progressively softened by tree planting and natural regeneration associated with the National Forest initiative.
Both villages retain a strong local identity: small shops, pubs, a village hall and community groups help keep social life busy, while many residents commute to nearby towns for work. The shift from mining to mixed rural and residential uses has left an interesting mix of heritage features, green spaces and practical links to the surrounding towns of north‑west Leicestershire in England.
