Olney is a small historic market town in the Borough of Milton Keynes, traditionally in Buckinghamshire, sitting near the valley of the River Great Ouse. Its compact town centre is known for neat Georgian buildings, an active weekly market and a mixture of local shops and commuter households, with many residents travelling to nearby centres such as Milton Keynes or London for work.
The town punches above its weight culturally and historically: it was home to the poet William Cowper and the hymn writer John Newton, who together produced the Olney Hymns (the latter associated with "Amazing Grace"), and it hosts one of the country's best known annual Shrove Tuesday pancake races. Overall Olney retains a strong community feel, blending heritage events and village‑scale everyday life.
