Olney is a compact historic ward and market town within the unitary authority of Milton Keynes, lying in the ceremonial county of Buckinghamshire on the floodplain of the River Great Ouse. It retains a handsome Georgian High Street and a conservation feel, with surrounding agricultural countryside that gives the ward a distinctly rural edge despite good transport links into Milton Keynes and on to London.
Locally the area is known for a strong community life and a rich cultural heritage: it’s celebrated for the annual pancake race and for associations with the poet William Cowper and the hymn-writer John Newton, commemorated at the Cowper and Newton Museum. The economy is largely driven by local services, independent shops and tourism, with many residents commuting out for work while community events and small-scale agriculture keep village traditions alive.
