North Killingholme is a small village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, lying on the south bank of the Humber Estuary a few miles west of Immingham. The landscape mixes low-lying arable farmland and intertidal mudflats with a strong industrial fringe: the nearby docks, terminals and oil/chemical works that line the Humber have had a profound effect on the area’s character and economy.
Historically a modest agricultural settlement, North Killingholme expanded in the 20th century as port and energy development increased and it hosted a Second World War bomber airfield, traces of which remain in local memory and landscape. Today it is a small, close-knit community balancing village life with employment tied to the estuary industries, while the surrounding saltmarsh and mudflats are important for coastal wildlife and birdwatching.
