Rosedale East Side sits on the eastern flank of the narrow Rosedale valley in the North York Moors of North Yorkshire, a largely upland, heather‑covered landscape of steep ridges and hidden valleys. Its moorland setting gives dramatic views and popular walking and cycling routes, including the nearby infamous ascent of Rosedale Chimney Bank, while small hamlets and farms are scattered along lanes rather than clustered in a single village.
The area has a strong 19th‑century industrial heritage from the ironstone boom, with calcining kilns, mine scars and old railway earthworks still visible, but today the economy is mainly grazing, grouse moors and tourism - holiday cottages, outdoor recreation and local craft businesses. Socially it’s sparsely populated and rural‑in character, with a close‑knit community that draws on both agricultural traditions and the conservation and leisure interests of visitors to the North York Moors.
